Development of synthesis techniques of oxide (ZnO, SnO2 ecc) colloids: the syntheses are carried out through pyrolysis of non toxic and cheap precursors or complexes already containing the final elements. The precursor and synthesis mechanisms are meant as innovative toward the existing works. Embedding of the colloids in glassy matrix: development of different surface functionalizations of the colloids, embedding of semiconductor colloids in glassy or hybrid organic-inorganic protective hosts, study of the luminescence properties of the resulting materials for optical or sensing applications. Development of innovative techniques for the low temperature synthesis of nanostructures oxide powders: using sol-gel systems as cheap precursors for the nanopowder synthesis through self-limiting nanoreactors; characterization of the purity of the final products, heat-treatments and chemical and structural characterization of the final products. Implementation of the obtained powders for the preparation of thick films sensors by drop-coating. Chemical synthesis of thin films from metalorganic precursors: deposition of oxide thin films (SnO2, TiO2, In2O3, MoO3, WO3 etc) through sol-gel techniques starting from chloro-alkoxides or other solution techniques; deposition of thin films onto alumina or silicon. Development of innovative precursors for the synthesis of oxide powders through self-propagating high temperature combustion reactions: precursor synthesis through sol-gel processing of transition metal complexes , implementation of the combustion reactions, characterization of the final material. Investigation of the technological problematic related to the development of thin films gas sensors: optimization of the deposition of thin films and of the following chemical etching, investigation of the uniformity and adhesion of the films to the substrate. Materials characterization through X-Ray diffraction, Uv-Vis, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, thermal analyses, SEM, XPS and Auger spectroscopy. Structural and morphological characterization of nanocrystals (X-ray Diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy).
