In the recent years, spanwise arrays of symmetric dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuators have been widely investigated for the purpose of using them in bypass transition control. 1–5 Such devices are composed of two metallic electrodes separated by a dielectric layer: one electrode is supplied with a high voltage waveform and exposed to the surrounding flow, the other one is grounded and completely covered by an insulating material. Typical operating mode involves the application of an alternating current (AC) voltage waveform in the kV and kHz ranges, which causes the air near the plasma actuator to weakly ionize. In these working conditions, heat generation is negligible and a “cold plasma discharge” is thus formed.
